Rav Yisrael Alter (רב ישראל אלתר)  lived from 1895 until 1977, also known as the Beit Yisrael, after the works he authored, was the fifth Rebbe of the Hasidic dynasty of Ger, a position he held from 1948 until 1977.

The Beis Yisroel, the 5th Rebbe of the Ger Hassidic dynasty, was born in 1895 in Góra Kalwaria, Ukraine.

He escaped the Nazis and arrived in Eretz Yisroel in 1940 together with his father the Imrei Emes, and his half-brother, the Pnei Menachem.

After the passing of his father during the Israel War of independence in 1948 he was appointed as Rebbe and over the next 29 years worked to rebuild his decimated Chasiddus.

His interactions with people of all walks of life left a great impression on them and he was able to gain many followers even from amongst the Litvish world.

He was very influential within the Hareidi Agudas Yisroel party and guided its work within the Knesset

Having lost his wife, children and grandchildren in the holocaust, his position of Rebbe was taken over by his brother the Lev Simcha after his passing in 1977.
