Description

Rav Shneur Zalman of Liadi (רב שניאור זלמן מליאדי‎), who lived from 1745 until 1812, was the founder and first Rebbe of Chabad, then based in Liadi in the Russian Empire.

He was the author of many works, and is best known for Shulchan Aruch HaRav, Tanya, and his Siddur Torah Or compiled according to the Nusach Ari.

He is most commonly known as the Alter Rebbe or the Baal Hatanya, after his famous sefer, but is also known by the names Admor HaZaken (האדמו”ר הזקן), Rabbenu HaZaken (רבינו הזקן), the RaShaZ (רש”ז), or the GRaZ (גר”ז).

As a Torah genius and halachist, and a close disciple of the Magid of Mezritch he used his masterly synthesis of intellect and emotion to bridge the gap between the mind and heart and create the framework of Chabad ideology.
