In his youth he learnt in Yeshivas Porat Yosef – later led by Rav Bentzion Abba Shaul, and at which Rav Yitzchak Kaduri and Rav Ovadya Yosef both gave shiur.

He had a special bond with the Lubavitcher Rebbe was especially close to the Baba Sali who lived near Be’er Sheva where Rav Eliyahu served as a Dayan – the youngest in the country at the time of his appointment.

Four years later he was appointed to the Beis Din in Yerushalayim, and eventually to the Supreme Beis Din.

Until his passing in 2010 he was instrumental in influencing many to come closer to Torah Judaism and has been credited with bringing many “Dati” into the so-called “Hardal” camp.
