Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv (רב יוסף שלום אלישיב), born in Šiauliai, Lithuania in 1910, was considered by many in the Lithuanian-orthodox community as the Posek-Hador or pre-eminent arbiter of halacha. His advice and rulings were sought on a wide spectrum of private and public issues affecting the orthodox community in Israel and throughout the diaspora.

He spent most of his life learning and teaching Torah although he never held an official position as a Rosh Yeshiva (dean) or rav of a community.

Following the passing of Rav Shach, he became the de-facto spiritual leader of the Degel Hatorah political party.

Following his passing in 2012 he was succeeded by Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman as head of the Degel Hatora and leading Posek for the Orthodox community.
