Rav Ovadia Yosef (רב עובדיה יוסף) was born in Bagdad, Iraq in 1920.
In 1924 his family emigrated to Eretz Yisroel where he joined Yeshivat Porat Yosef together with Rav Ben Zion Abba Shaul at the age of 13, quickly standing out for his passion and ability in learning Torah.
He is known for his many sefarim, notably his multi-volume work – Yabia Omer, containing halachic responsa in many areas of Jewish life. In 1973 he was appointed as Rishon LeZion (Sefardi Chief Rabbi). In 1984 he founded the Sefardi-religious political party Shas, which he led until his passing in 2013.
