What does metal for airplanes and artworks have in common?
Not much, except me!
Metal comes in all types and strengths.
I know, I work with it every day, all day as an aeronautical engineer.
I know that a quarter of a millimeter can make all the difference in strength and ability.
With airplanes I don’t worry as much about the aesthetics as many things get painted or covered up, but with artworks the aesthetics, the quality and the finish are all equally important.
This was a huge learning curve for me.
I knew all about mechanics, loud hammers and large tools.
I did not yet know about fine jeweler’s files, delicate long nose pliers and extremely accurate laser cutting machines.
I learnt quickly that scratches and burn marks happen so easily- and can render an artwork worthless!
But I also discovered that when done correctly the brushed finish on a perfectly laser cut piece of stainless steel can be absolutely stunning .
I saw our artwork start to come together before my eyes, tiny details being put in place until piece by piece the portrait comes together
I was wowed at the finished product when I finally worked it out and a finished laser cut stainless steel portraits stared back at me from my wall.
I could see how the sensitivity and the finicky techniques I had needed to master revealed the most incredible modern, minimalist and powerful creation that I could stand back and enjoy seeing every day.
